A selection of Stella's ceramic works — vessels, Raku-fired pieces, and smaller sculptural forms — are available to purchase directly through her Etsy shop.

Each piece is original, made by hand in North Yorkshire, and carries the marks of its making: the trace of fingers, the unpredictability of flame, the quiet authority of form that has been considered over many hours.

About Stella

Art has been a constant in my life, a presence even when circumstance pushed it to the margins. For decades, painting and drawing offered a kind of sustenance; visits to galleries, encounters with sculptors and their processes, travels to places where art felt embedded in the air. Cape Town in particular left its mark: the colour, the energy, the artists working in settings I had never imagined. Those impressions stayed with me long after I returned home.

A working life, full and demanding, meant that the creative side rarely had the room it deserved. It was only later, and catalysed, as it was for many, by the stillness of the pandemic, that I enrolled on a Fine Art course with City Lit in London. That breadth of study, printmaking, drawing, painting, and, crucially, sculpture — opened something. From there, a warm community at Rural Arts in Thirsk extended my practice further into dry point etching, lino cutting, and printmaking.

And then, in a way that felt almost accidental and yet entirely inevitable, I fell into clay. Into ceramics. I have not looked back.

I have since had the privilege of working under exceptional artists — James Oughtibridge, Eudald de Juana, and Andrian Melka among them — and the work has deepened in ways I could not have anticipated. My sculptural practice is rooted in two impulses: the abstract, where form and surface carry the meaning; and the figurative, where the face — its particular humanity, its interior life — is the subject. Everything I make comes from the same place.

Commission a Piece

Stella welcomes commissions and in particular for portrait head sculptures, though she is open to conversations about other forms and scales.

A commission begins with a conversation. Whether you have someone specific in mind, a person you wish to honour, a face you want captured in clay, or a looser sense of the kind of piece you are drawn to, that conversation is where the work begins.

There is no standard brief, no fixed process. Each commission is its own thing. Use the form to introduce yourself and tell Stella what you have in mind. She will be in touch.
